Oviedo: Jews in the Heart of Asturias

The Jewish presence in Oviedo became consolidated in the 13th century, although there are references dating back to the 11th century. The community, mainly dedicated to lending and various trades, lived within the city walls in the area between Plaza Porlier, Trascorrales, Cimadevilla, and El Fontán. It had up to two synagogues and its own cemetery, the Huerto de los Judíos, located where the Teatro Campoamor stands today.

After the expulsion of 1492, the Sephardic legacy was reflected in the urban layout and some local symbols. Today, Oviedo is part of the Network of Jewish Quarters of Spain and keeps alive the memory of its Jewish past.

Nowadays, the city promotes themed routes, exhibitions, and cultural activities that allow visitors and residents to learn about the history and legacy of Oviedo’s Jewish community, strengthening interest in the Sephardic heritage in Asturias.
